Alumna Iu-Hui Chua, M.F.A. theatre and dance 2013, returns to UC Davis on Nov. 9 for a workshop introduction to The Tamalpa Life/ Art Process. The event takes place in the Della Davidson Performance Studio, Nelson Hall.

Co-taught with Joy Cosculluela, the free workshop is open to all UC Davis students. 

In the Tamalpa Life / Art Process, movement and life are intertwined. The body contains our life experiences and movement is our primary language. When we dance, we say something about our lives. When we dance our lives, we also connect with the creative forces that live within and open to new ways of expressing who we are.

In this introductory workshop, participants are introduced to The Tamalpa Life/ Art Process, an approach that enlivens dialogue between body and imagination, and life experiences and art making. Using movement, drawing, poetic writing, and improvisational performance, participants will tap into art’s symbolic language to explore current life themes and generate new resources.

Iu-Hui Chua, MFA, RSME/T, CPC devises physical theater, dance, and video performance. She was a member of Anna Halprin’s Sea Ranch Collective and an associate teacher for Ms. Halprin. She’s danced with Ledoh and Salt Farm, Dandelion Dancetheater, Guillermo Gomez-Pena, Ellen Bromberg, Sherwood Chen, Headmistress, and Disneyland. Iu-Hui has presented her work at San Francisco International Arts Festival, SomaFest, Athens Digital Arts Festival, and ODC Summerfest. Artist residencies include Penasco Theater, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, CounterPulse, and Djerassi Resident Artists. She has taught dance, theater, and Halprin work internationally and is core faculty at Tamalpa Institute.

Joy Cosculluela, RSME, MFA, CMT is a performing artist, choreographer, bodyworker, and somatic movement educator. She is the artistic director of Wayfinding Performance Group, a multicultural group of artists in San Francisco, and has presented numerous works in various venues. She has performed with Anna Halprin & The Sea Ranch Collective (Seasons, Spirit of Place, Parades and Changes). Joy is the director of Performance Lab SF, where she offers classes to encourage creativity, and is also a co-director of EAR to the Ground Productions, an organization that holds street performances in response to current events. Joy holds a Master’s in Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College and is core faculty at Tamalpa Institute.
