Some Things Are Private

Some Things are Private is a surreal docu-drama addressing photographer Sally Mann’s family photos taken in the early 90’s in which nude pictures of her young children sparked controversy for decades. Graduating MFA Directing candidate, Candice Andrews, has been in direct communication with the playwright Deborah Salem Smith and Mann to combine efforts in order to produce this show at UC Davis. We are the first university granted the rights to produce this show.

Some Things are Private premiered in 2008 commissioned and produced by Trinity Repertory Company. The show was created by Deborah Salem Smith and Laura Kepley, written by Deborah Salem Smith. Andrews will be joining with the Photography department, Sociology and Psychology departments to produce a multi-faceted performance where post-show audience talk-backs will include thesis exploration on the following questions:

  • What is Art and Where do we draw the line?
  • How does the human perspective change when we place a child in front of the lens vs an adult?
  • How is the human body used as a form of art and when does the exposure of nudity cross the line?

Audience talk-backs will be held after the performances on Wednesday, May 5, and Saturday, May 8.
